Sex ScandalsGood morning.
Friday saw several earnings reports from the big banks.  Overall, most fared better than expected, although it’s still clear that there’s a decline in economic activity, especially for higher-margin banking business such as mergers and acquisitions.
The biggest yellow flag comes behind the headline earnings numbers.  Banks are quietly boosting their loss reserves, which may continue to rise as interest rates move higher and borrowers potentially default on mortgages and automobiles.  Traders should continue to look for opportunities on the short side of the market – especially after last week’s strong rally.2023_01_14 PMP

Healing the Post-Holiday Blues Hangover

Get Over Da BluesIf you’re feeling a little blue – or downright depressed – after the holidays, you’re not alone.  Post-holiday blues (and post-vacation blues for the matter) are a real thing, and if you experience a dark-mood day (or week) after the holidays, it’s quite normal.

During the holidays you are literally surrounded by expectations of how you are supposed to feel, what you are supposed to do and what you are supposed to want.  If you don’t feel that this is “the most wonderful time of the year” or you don’t have access to buying extravagant presents, you may feel like something is wrong with you.  You may feel isolated and alone.  Now, add in the lack of sunlight in most geographical areas, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for feeling blue.  You may think you are the only one who feels this way, but YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE!

More importantly, here’s what to do about it.

    • Light.  If you don’t have access to sunlight, get a light box, go to a spa (with light therapy) or simply turn on more lights.  It all helps.
    • Connection.  Surround yourself with people who make you feel good (not people who hold you to some societal expectation of how you are supposed to feel).
    • Movement.  A sedentary body flattens mood like nothing else.  Make it a point to move every day, even if only for a few minutes every hour.
    • Create.  Make something from nothing because it’s fun and it’s good for your brain.  Try a new recipe, buy kinetic sand and build a castle, doodle, build a spaceship out of Legos.  It’s all about the process of creativity that lifts your mood.
    • Reward yourself.  Treat yourself with small things – things to look forward to later in the day or later in the week.  Pick an activity that you like to do – it could be a movie you want to see, a museum you haven’t been to in a while or something as simple as a chai tea latte.
    • Clear your Clutter.  Your physical clutter impacts your emotional well-being.  Choose a messy or over-packed closet in your home or your office and take some time to purge and reorganize.  It’s amazing how effective this can be in relieving your emotional clutter.
    • Quiet Time.  Stop filling up your schedule and take a few moments every day to slow down.  This tool is a perfect activity to accompany you during your moments of quiet.
    • Volunteer.  Giving feels good and creates connection with others who have similar views and passions.  Choose an organization whose mission resonates with you and go for it!
    • Eat Smart.  Eat dark leafy greens and cut down on sugars and refined flours, which give your system a high-low spike that negatively impacts your mood (and depletes your energy).
    • Sleep and Hydration.  As basic as this may sound, getting ample sleep and staying hydrated is absolutely vital for your mental health (and physical health).  These are non-negotiables.

The most courageous thing you can do to care for yourself is to tune into your whole self and get support when you need it.

You can do it!

“COMMITMENT is what Transforms a promise into reality.”  —Abraham Lincoln

PERSUASION GuideBook & VideoIn order to be accepted by society, people do their best to stick to their words.  It’s a matter of honor and integrity.  People are committed to doing things that are consistent with their values, beliefs, agreement, or actions.  To per-suade people using consistency, find out what aspect of your request or proposal could “tie in” with his/her values.  Then relate it to the thing you’d like him/her to do.

Example 1:
Your brother is a workaholic and you want him to take a break.  Ask him if taking care of his health is very important to him.  If he says “yes”, then tell him that he should take a break from his stressful job and go to a relaxing vacation with you.  Saying he doesn’t need a break would be inconsistent with what he previously said (that taking care of his health is very important to him).  By first asking a question that he believes in or he can relate to, he is in a more receptive state to accept your proposal (which is associated to the question) in order to be consistent.

When someone has made a commitment himself, it is much easier to persuade him at that moment.

Example 2:
A philanthropist has just announced his commitment to saving the environment.  Now would be a good time to solicit his help for your “Revive the Rainforests” campaign.  After all, he has just said it himself.  Backing out now would tarnish his name.

“Commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the serious promise to press on, to get up,
no matter how many times you are knocked down.”
—David McNally

Day #10

“Thinking good thoughts produces good feelings.  Good feelings help you create the life that you want — a life that you enjoy getting up for each day.”

Thinking Bridge… not the structure, not the wall… the game of Bridge!  Thinking how people interact, show their hands, so to speak.  Today, most of the day will be reading, “studying people and phycology.”  Probably fits well with Wednesdays TV’s hit show “Survivor”which is between seasons, thus no show tonight and my “social withdrawal” symptoms.  [Out of popcorn anyway…]  🙁

Took a taxi to work this morning; walked home after missing my bus ride.  All is well as the busses runs every hour and I beat it home!

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise,” Ben Franklin advises almost 300 years ago.  Taking that path really did make a big difference in my life.  And I’m not the only one.  There are several studies showing that successful entrepreneurs and most CEOs typically get to work at least an hour before their employees.  Most of the wealthiest people I know get up early.

Got more news on the “caddy,” as Southgate Chevrolet Buick GMG Ltd. have kept the car over-the-weekend and most of the day!  Off (work) tomorrow, so Southgate will pick me up (at home) and feel confident in returning my vehicle.
